NGO Goonj claims firecracker devastated its Delhi centre, tons of material reduced to ash

New Delhi: NGO Goonj's centre in the capital was allegedly engulfed in flames because of a fire cracker on Diwali night on Wednesday. Goonj Founder Anshu Gupta shared a Facebook post along with the pictures of devastating inferno claiming that a fire cracker led to the fire on the property located in Sarita Vihar.

The flames lasted for about seven hours and it took 10 fire brigades to douse the flames. It was only at around 2 am on Thursday that the fire was put out by the fire tenders.

However, the damage was already done as stocks of woolen clothes, blankets and other essential winter commodities were reduced to ashes.

"Here I was asking you to spread the message against crackers and there a cracker did this to Goonj's center in Delhi. Seven hours of unmanageable fire, 10 fire brigades till 2 am on Diwali night. 3000 square feet of area, tons of material, where we all had put in our days and nights turned into ash !! Nothing much to say. Anger on this insane, menace, vulgarity called crackers! Will share more as we fight back but certainly one of the saddest moments for the team and lakhs of people who are a part of Goonj's larger family, particularly, sad as blankets to woolens, clothes to whatever is needed much more, in the days to come. Response on a few things from our Delhi office might be slow for the next couple of days as the team is fighting back with this huge loss of material, money and space !!" he wrote in his Facebook post.

Goonj is a non-governmental organisation based in Delhi, which undertakes disaster relief, humanitarian aid and community development in parts of 21 states across India. It recycles discarded clothes and household goods into useful products for the poor.
