HYDERABAD: Here’s some bad news for residents of the twin cities. There’s no exemption from the 4-hr power cuts even for Vijaya Dasami. So, be prepared to celebrate the festival in darkness. In fact, officials fear that if anything, the situation may further worsen! The Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (APCPDCL) said that power supply to the Greater Hyderabad limits from various power generation sources is getting worse with each passing day.CPDCL officials told Express that Greater Hyderabad requires about 40 Million Units (MUs) of power per day. On September 26 and 27, the power supply was 35.3 MUs and on September 28 it was 36.26 MUs.The next day it rose marginally to 36.69 MUs but dipped again on September 30 to 36.41 MUs and remained the same on October 1. But on Sunday, the power supply fell alarmingly to 33.78 MUs.As against the peak demand of 2,000 Mega Watt power supply, the present supply is about 1,500 to 2,000 MW in GHMC limits covering all categories including domestic, commercial and industrial. The above consumption is for Greater Hyderabad comprising RR South, North, East, Hyderabad Central, Hyderabad, North and Hyderabad South. Besides the official four-hour power cuts, some areas in the twin cities are experiencing unofficial power cuts up to six hours a day.“This is absurd. There should be exemption at least for the festival,” said a fuming Lakshmi, a resident of Khairatabad.Whatever consumers say, the officials, however, expressed helplessness. The CPDCL officials say the situation may continue for the next 20 days. “The Chief Minister is insisting that power supply be given to farmers on a priority basis. If we continue to give priority to farmers, a day may not be far when the city may have to experience 6-7 hours power cuts,” an official said on condition of anonymity. He also pointed to the power generation problems at Hydel and thermal stations to buttress his argument.
