Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has asked officials from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district to explain why there is no slaughterhouse in the area.
The bench of Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Manoj Gupta summoned officials including the DM, SSP, CDO and Municipal Commissioner after hearing a petition of Dilsham Ahmed of Gorakhpur and 120 others.
Gorakhpur is the parliamentary constituency of UP CM Yogi Adityanath. Since coming to power, Adityanath launched a campaign against illegal slaughterhouses in the state.
The next hearing of the case is scheduled on 11th July 2017.
The petition said that in the absence of a slaughterhouse in Gorakhpur, there are no valid meat selling shops in the area. This is a violation the right to choose what to eat, it claimed.
The Municipal Commissioner of Gorakhpur could not give a satisfactory answer on when the land will be acquired for the slaughterhouse and when it will be constructed.
