KOCHI: The Onam season seems to have come to the rescue of the business community in the city ahead of the demolition of the North Railway Overbridge. The district administration’s decision to postpone the trial run of the traffic diversions as part of the demolition of the North Railway Overbridge, has been widely welcomed by the business community from across the city. However, the postponement of the diversion has ensured that the metro rail associated project may not become a reality in the near future. Welcoming the decision to postpone the trial run, Kerala Merchants Union pointed out that even if implemented the traffic diversion would have been a failure considering the pathetic condition of roads. “The authorities should go ahead with traffic diversions only after renovating all the roads in the city. Also opinions and feedback from merchants and passengers should be taken into account while bringing in traffic diversions,” opined K Venkatesh Pai, president, Kerala Merchants Union.Earlier, it had been decided that traffic diversions would be implemented on August 27 on an experimental basis. The authorities were planning to go ahead with the demolition of the North ROB once the diversions are in place. However, during the last round of discussions held on August 26, the district administration decided to postpone it to September 12 and 13. Announcing the decision District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said the changes were made considering the rush during the Onam days.
