CHENNAI: Against the backdrop of the arrests of DMK’s frontline leaders on land grab charges in the recent past, the AIADMK on Monday targeted DMK chief M Karunanidhi on a similar charge — on the ‘misuse’ of Open Space Reservation (OSR) land in front of the DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam here and 700 sqft of land behind his Gopalapuram residence since 1967.When AIADMK MLA from R K Nagar, P Vetrivel, levelled these charges in the State Assembly and said DMK men alone had the privilege of looting the panchaboothas (five elements of Nature), DMK members were on their feet urging Speaker D Jayakumar to expunge the remark of Vetrivel.Following this, DMK and AIADMK members shouted at each other and Deputy Leader of DMK, Durai Murugan, was seen arguing with the Speaker for raising a point of order. While Local Administration Minister KP Munusamy was saying that the DMK leader could speak after his reply to the issue was raised, noisy scenes prevailed for some time. Later, Durai Murugan and his colleagues staged a walk-out.Munusamy in response said the Chennai Corporation had identified encroachments in many places, including the one behind Karunanidhi’s house. The government will take legal action to retrieve these encroached lands, he said.
