Odisha Election Results 2024: CM Naveen Patnaik Loses From Kantabanji In First-Ever Electoral Defeat
This is the first time Naveen Patnaik, the Biju Janata Dal supremo, has lost an election.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday lost to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Laxman Bag. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo lost from the Kantabanji seat.

This is the first time Naveen Patnaik has suffered an electoral defeat. He has won every election he has contested since 1998.

He has, however, won from the Hinjili legislative constituency defeating Sisir Kumar Mishra of the BJP.

His own party is also staring at defeat as BJP makes major gains in the coastal state. The BJP has made major gains and has won over 60 seats and are looking forward to forming the government, ending Patnaik’s dreams of becoming the nation’s longest-serving chief minister, a record Sikkim’s former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.

Naveen Patnaik won his first elections from Aska constituency when he made his foray into politics and became an MP from that constituency twice in 1998 and 1999.

He has won six times from Hinjili, including in the 2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly Elections.

The BJD won over 40 seats but is likely to be relegated to the opposition benches as BJP created history by winning the state that has been held by BJD for over two decades.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has won one seat. Independents have emerged victorious in three seats. Congress has won over 11 seats so far. Votes are still being counted in several constituencies.
