THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The City Police have presented an impressive show by keeping crimes at bay during the Onam Week celebrations organised by the Department of Tourism with great pomp. The strict vigil by the city police team ensured that no crimes took place amid the huge crowd that hit the streets to enjoy the celebrations.City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham attributed the efficacy of the camera surveillance system, along with the hundreds of police personnel deployed in the city during the celebrations, as the major reasons for their success in preventing untoward incidents."The people were well aware of our camera surveillance system, which prompted many of them to stay away from unruly behaviour in public. The moving camera system that we experimented with during the celebrations needs special mention,’’ he told City Express. Also, with the help of the moving camera system, the police could spot an exact number of 136 children, who got lost amid the crowd. The kids were reunited with their parents through the special control rooms opened at different festival centres. He said that all the officers who were a part of the security enforcement during the celebrations will be given a good service entry. A total of 1,700 police personnel, including uniformed officers, woman civil police officers, ‘mufti’ police, shadow police and ghost patrol teams had taken part in the security enforcement. As many as 1,300 police personnel, both armed and unarmed, were deployed across the city. They were reinforced with an additional 400 personnel on the final day of the celebrations, during the pageantry. No crimes in connection with the celebrations were registered by the police during the past week. "Over the last two days, our official e-mail is being flooded with numerous messages, both from superior officers and common people, lauding the selfless service of the police personnel,’’ the Commissioner added.MLA Palode Ravi, the chairman of the organising committee of the celebrations, has also released a statement commending the hard work of the police as people raised no complaint on law and order problems or over  any other trouble by miscreants during the week-long celebrations.
