Storyteller Mahamandaleshwar Indradev Maharaj of Vrindavan has sparked a controversy with his remarks about Goddess Sita during a recent discourse. Indradev Maharaj, a resident of Shri Radha Kishori Dham on Parikrama Marg in Uttar Pradesh’s Vrindavan, commented on actors portraying Goddess Sita and Lord Rama in Ramlila performances, claiming they smoke cigarettes and consume alcohol.
During his address, Indradev Maharaj remarked, “We have all seen them, go and open the blouse and see, this is not Sita but complete Kumbhakarna.” The viral video of Indradev Maharaj’s controversial remarks sparked widespread outrage on social media, prompting calls for legal action against him. Many are demanding that an FIR be filed against Indradev Maharaj for his comments regarding Goddess Sita and Lord Rama.
In response to the escalating backlash, Indradev Maharaj issued an apology, clarifying that his intention was not to insult God or offend anyone’s sentiments. He explained that he was recounting childhood observations to his audience at Vyas Peeth.
However, religious organisations remain dissatisfied with Indradev Maharaj’s apology. Pandit Sanjay Haryana, former state vice-president of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, strongly advocated for legal action. He urged the Senior Superintendent of Police to initiate proceedings against Indradev Maharaj, citing previous instances where he had allegedly disrespected religious symbols.
He also emphasised that Indradev Maharaj’s comments about Goddess Sita and Lord Rama are intolerable and warrant strict action. He asserted that such behaviour cannot be excused and must be met with appropriate consequences.
This incident comes shortly after another controversial episode involving Mahashivpuran narrator Pradeep Mishra, who recently made remarks regarding Lord Krishna’s worshipper Radha Rani, further inflaming religious sensitivities.
