Raipur: A day-long shutdown called by the opposition Congress began in Chhattisgarh on Thursday to protest the massacre of 76 troopers by Maoists.
As per initial reports, schools were closed and public transport was hit in urban areas across the state while no impact of the strike was seen in rural belts.
Chhattisgarh state Congress president Dhanendra Sahu said that the strike was called to protest the flawed policies of the state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) that resulted in the deadliest Maoist attack Tuesday in Dantewada district. Dantewada is some 450 km south of capital Raipur.
Hundreds of Maoists trapped over 80 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers on a hilly stretch and went on a killing spree using pressure bombs and automatic weapons. They killed 76 troopers.
