PUDUCHERRY: The Opposition members of the AIADMK and the DMK on Saturday joined hands on the issue of three convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, and staged walk-outs in the territorial assembly protesting against the Speaker’s refusal of permission to speak on the issue.The AIADMK members have been repeatedly trying to raise the issue during the zero hour in the Assembly, but did not succeed. The DMK, which was so far silent on the issue, tried to raise it on Saturday during the zero hour.When DMK floor leader A M H Nazeem tried to raise the issue, Speaker V Sabapathy, denied permission stating that it was subjudice and should not be taken up in the Assembly.Then both DMK and AIADMK members together pressed for the Speaker’s permission to raise the issue. Congress MLA K Lakshminarayanan vehemently objected to it, and urged the Speaker not to permit the move. “Let the court decide the matter and give the verdict,” he said.However, Sabapathy made it clear that none of the remarks made by the members would enter the Assembly records and would be expunged.Despite this, DMK’s Nazeem argued with the Speaker and said that if the remarks of the DMK members were expunged, they would stage a walk-out. In the meantime, five members of the AIADMK - A Anbazhagan, Om Sakthi Segar, P Purushotanam, L Periasamy and A Baskar, went to the Speaker’s podium and entered into an argument with him.They also sat in a dharna in the well of the House, while the two DMK members staged a walk out protesting against the Speaker’s ruling.When the members made some reference to the TN government, the Speaker said the Tamil Nadu government had vast powers unlike the Puducherry government, which was a territorial administration, thus the UT’s government could not function like that of Tamil Nadu. Protesting against the Speaker’s announcement, the AIADMK members also staged a walk-out.‘Provide Dole to the Unemployed’AIADMK legislator A Baskar, on Friday, urged the Territorial Government to provide monthly assistance to unemployed youth in the Union Territory.Local Body ElectionsAIADMK MLA Om Sakthi Sekar said that the government did not earmark any funds for the local body elections, which should be held within the next six months as directed by the Madras High Court. CM Assurance on Paddy ProcurementChief Minister N Rangasamy has made an assurance that the government would take measures for procuring paddy through PASIC and PAPSCO, and use it to distribute free rice through the PDS.
