Srinagar: The daring escape of Naveed alias Abu Hanzulla from a Srinagar hospital has exposed shocking lapses in security.
News18 has learned that Naveed had access to a mobile phone, with WhatsApp installed on it. The Pakistani militant communicated with Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and formulated a plan where his Tuesday visit to the hospital would eventually lead to his escape.
Preliminary investigations suggest that two local LeT terrorists reached Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital with weapons and opened fire at police officials.
In the ensuing melee, the two terrorists escaped with Naveed, who had been taken to the emergency ward for treatment.
“Two local boys had brought a pistol and shot the police officer near the OPD on the ground floor. In the chaos, Naveed and his aides managed to escape,” said a source close to the investigation.
Two policemen were killed after the attack, with one of them breathing his last on the spot. A carbine rifle of one of the cops is also reported missing, the official added.
After the daring attack, Special Operations Group (SOG) and CRPF cordoned off the hospital and conducted a search operation. Naveed and his aides, though, could not be found.
All of Srinagar is now on high alert. Photographs of Naveed alias Abu Hanzulla has been circulated to all police stations. The hunt is on,” said a top police official to News18.
Naveed was arrested in 2014 by CRPF and Rashtriya Rifles from Sham Pora village, near Anantnag in Kashmir. He is a resident of Sahiwala in Multan district of Pakistan.
Intelligence sources have added that Naveed is a self-styled commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
