Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on his first visit to the restive North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan on Thursday assured the nation that the army was determined to win the war against the Taliban.
Sharif, who met the soldiers involved in a major operation to flush out the militants from the troubled area since June, was given a detailed briefing by army chief General Raheel Sharif in Miranshah, regional headquarters of North Waziristan.
He was informed that more than 90 per cent area of the district has been cleared. Addressing the troops, Sharif said that it was a difficult war but the army was determined to win it for the nation.
"It is not a conventional war where the enemy is known. In such wars, the enemy is hidden and unknown. But we will win this war which will bring peace in the country," he said. Sharif praised the bravery of the troops who have killed close to 1,100 rebels since the launch of the operation 'Zarb-i-Azb'(sharp and cutting strike).
The Prime Minister was also shown the former command and control center of Taliban and their various hideouts as well as the weapons seized by the army during the offensive. Geo TV reported that it was the first ever visit of any Pakistani Prime Minister to Miranshah.
The Taliban have carried out hundreds of bombings and suicide attacks that have claimed about 40,000 lives, according to official figures.
