BANGALORE: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) may be on a cleaning mode along the Metro Rail route, but the Civic Agency is neglecting to clear post-festival garbage accumulating in various street corners. On one side, Palike authorities including Commissioner, Mayor, elected representatives and engineers are on their toes night and day to spruce the place in preparation for the arrival of Union Minister of Urban Development Kamal Nath on October 20 to inaugurate Metro Rail service. On the other side, many City roads and markets are becoming post-festival dumping yard. Major roads with commercial space are seen strewn with decorative materials that earlier adorned vehicles on the occasion of Ayudha Pooja. Plantain stalks, plantain and mango leaves and flowers are found scattered on footpaths. Savithramma, a regular devotee to Gali Anjaneya temple, says that every year vendors sell flowers, mango leaves and plantain leaves on Mysore Road near the temple. “We keep requesting the Palike authorities to clear the mess, but in vain. Why don’t people continue cleaning with the same spirit even after the festival,” she questions. The scene at KR Market is no different with heaps of flowers and plantain leaves dumped near Silver Jubilee Park Road. “It is already stinking. If it rains, then there will be chaos. Palike should clean it before it rains,” says auto-rickshaw driver Govinda Raju. When contacted, Deputy Mayor S Harish says that contractors are celebrating the festival and hence are on leave. Not many pourakarmikas are working except a few, who collect garbage door-to-door.”The festival debris will be cleared in another three days,” he assured.According to him, around 4,500 metric tonnes of garbage is collected everyday while an additional 600 tonnes of garbage is collected during the festival season.
