'Pappu' is childish and clichéd
The climax is too convoluted with an overdose of emotions

Pappu (Krishnudu) is an overweight, unlucky guy who doesn’t get anything right. He considers himself to be smart and intelligent while the rest of his friends and colleagues find him very funny and don’t spare any chance to pull his leg.

Pappu's boss Banerji's daughter, Radha (Deepti) starts working in her dad’s company and Pappu falls in love with her. The story takes a turn or rather begins when Radha is kidnapped and her kidnappers demand a hefty amount from her father.

Banerji, on the advice of an employee (Uttej) hires a detective Ram (Subbaraju) to trace his daughter. Banerji’s guru suggests he involve someone who is very unlucky in the search of his daughter. Accordingly Banerji requests Subbaraju to involve Pappu in the process without letting him know the real intention.

The second half of the movie is about how Subbaraju and Pappu who are as different as chalk and cheese getting along with each other. Subbaraju is serious, smart and focussed while Pappu is naïve, thoughtless and very casual. How both of them manage to find Radha forms the rest of the story.

The first half of the movie is all about Pappu, his various experiences showing how jinxed and unlucky he is. The entry of detective Ram injects some life into the movie. Some of the scenes involving Ram and Pappu are funny and are perhaps the best parts of the movie.

The climax is too convoluted and clichéd with an overdose of emotions. The last 20 minutes completely ruin what could have been a decent story based on the contrasting personalities of Ram and Pappu.

Krishnudu as Pappu is OK as the unlucky, jinxed loser but he needs to move beyond stories that revolve around the concept of obese people. He has improved since his earlier ‘Vinayakudu’ days but is let down by the story this time. But it is fun to watch him trying to shake a leg in the songs especially in the cowboy attire.

Subbaraju who gets to play a positive role impresses with his performance. As detective Ram who is smart and has the ability to bash the goons, he dons the typical Telugu hero-like character in this movie.

Deepti is just about OK as the boss’s daughter in the movie. She is fair and good-looking which unfortunately are the two important prerequisites for a Telugu heroine ahead of the ability to act or fit a particular role. Performances by Banerji and Uttej are routine.

Music by Phani Kalyan is average. The song Ghal ghal Sirimuval is good but then it also marks the point in the movie from where things start going awry.

Some of the comedy scenes in the movie are childish. The fact that you also get to see the ‘elephant-giraffe’ jokes that you would have read on e-mail forwards years ago bears testimony to this fact.

Director Sapan Pasumarthy’s 'Pappu' has its funny moments. But then they are too few and far in between. You might prefer to watch those clips on your TV channel instead of watching the movie on the big screen.
