Waterfalls are a sight of nature. Some are huge and offer an amazingly breathtaking view. There are smaller waterfalls that are equally stunning and give one a completely different experience when you are near them. Meenmutty Waterfall, located in Kerala’s Wayanad, is one such presence. Although the waterfall is beautiful, according to the latest report, this place has become a dangerous site for visitors. People who visit this waterfall go down the waterfall freely, but the slippery rock formations near the waterfall have turned this place into an accident-prone zone. There have been reports of the presence of poisonous snakes near this waterfall. Meenmutty Waterfall is located around 45 km from the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. The place gives a glimpse of natural beauty surrounded by the mountain ranges of Western Ghats. The waterfall is located upriver in the Neyyar reservoir area, and travellers have to trek through the dense forests to reach the falls.
According to reports, a lot of people visit here for wedding photoshoots and more. This place is developing as a tourism centre, and small business enterprises are also emerging. Meenmutty is a great place to visit in the rainy season. One should be aware of the risks before travelling.
To reach Meenmutty, one has to take a boat ride from Neyyar Dam through its catchment area. By reaching KombaiKani tribal settlement, the trek starts towards the Meenmutty waterfalls, which are about 5 km from the settlement and KombaiKani waterfalls. Kombaikani waterfall is a wide fall on the course of the Neyyar River.
There is a forest camp house nearby, where trekkers can take rest and have food. Forest guides accompany one on this trek, which requires the permission of the forest department. Meenmutty Waterfall is an ideal destination for a one-day trek, and by evening the boat will pick you up from KombaiKani and drop you back at Neyyar dam.
