New Delhi: Double world and defending champion Fernando Alonso has been stripped of his pole position and moved five places down the Hungarian Grand Prix grid after he slowed down Lewis Hamilton in the qualifying stages on Saturday.
Alonso's British teammate Hamilton was handed the position hours after being delayed by his teammate in the pit lane as he was too late for his final lap at the Hungaroring.
McLaren will also not be allowed to score constructors' points.
Germany's Nick Hidefeld of BMW Sauber was bumped up to second with Kimi Raikkonen third and Ferrari's Felipe Massa on 14th.
Hamilton leads Spaniard Alonso by two points with seven races remaining in the Driver's Championship.
Both McLaren drivers were summoned along with team boss Ron Dennis and team manager Dave Ryan to the stewards' hearing at the Hungaroring.
Double world champion Alonso had taken pole position with his final lap on Saturday. Hamilton had been quickest until he was forced to wait behind Alonso for a final change of tyres.
The lengthy delay prevented him getting round the circuit in time for one last quick lap. "Because of the delay caused by Alonso, Hamilton was unable to complete his pit stop in time sufficient to enable him also to complete a flying lap," a statement said.
"The stewards find that he unnecessarily impeded another driver, Hamilton, and as a result he will be penalised by a loss of five grid positions."
