JAJPUR: The Irrigation Department lodged an FIR with Balichandrapur police on Wednesday alleging that the breach which flooded Kalashree village under Barachana block in the district was manmade. In his FIR, the junior engineer of Chandan Nagar section under Kendrapara Irrigation Division, Dhadi Sahu stated that a 30-foot long breach in the Mahanadi river high-level canal embankment leading to Patamundai in Kendrapara from Jagatpur near Kalashree village was manmade. The police registered a case and began investigation. The locals had earlier complained about the breach to the district authorities and demanded a probe. Sources said, locals spotted a breach at Kalashree after water receded from the Mahanadi river. This had created panic in the area since the canal emanated from it. The locals suspected it to be the handiwork of some anti-social elements and took up the matter with District Collector Anil Kumar Samal. “I personally visited the spot and found the breach unnatural,” Samal said. He directed the executive engineer of the Irrigation Department to lodge an FIR in this connection. The police have identified the culprit. “Our prime suspect is an employee of the Irrigation Department. Efforts are on to nab him,” said Balichandrapur police station IIC Asit Kumar Mohanty.
