With the announcement of the schedule for the Assembly elections in Kerala on March 1, the political climate heats up. Party meetings witness intense debates on the selection of candidates. The CPM state committee decides not to field V S Achuthanandan in the Assembly polls which leads to widespread protests by VS supporters. Finally, on  March 18, the politburo revokes state committee’s decision and asks VS to contest the election. Putting an end to the speculations that Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy who was caught in the palmolein mess may not contest the elections, the party decides to field him on his hometurf, Puthuppally. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala too decides to fight the battle from Harippad constituency. Will the ‘lotus’ bloom in Kerala was another question that was doing the rounds on the political scene. The seat -sharing process becomes more or less a smooth affair for the Left Front. Seat sharing becomes a headache for the United Democratic Front (UDF). The unified Mani group demands more number of seats in the Idukki-Kottayam belt. But the UDF stands against Mani’s wish. On April 13, Kerala presses button to install a new government to lead them for the next 5 years. Around 74.4 per cent of voters exercises their franchise.
