PARADIP: Former MLA and CPI leader Narayan Reddy was arrested by Ersama police late on Friday from Japa village under Ersama police limits in connection the December 14 clash between workers of a construction agency and activists of Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti. One person died in the clash and 25 others, engaged in the coastal roadwork, were injured. Reddy, who was spearheading the anti-Posco movement in Dhinkia after the arrest of PPSS leader Abhay Sahu, was nabbed a day after a Bapi Sarkel’s arrest. Ersama police led by IIC PK Badajena detained the CPI leader at Japa and arrested Reddy along with his colleague Sarbeswer Sahu while they were allegedly trying to run away to his village in Ganjam district on a motorcycle through the village route, police said. The anti-Posco leader was taken to Kujang police station amid tight security and produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class which remanded him in judicial custody. A murder case was slapped against him.Reddy said, “I was ready to surrender before the court on January 7 or 8 but was arrested on Friday night. The anti-Posco stir under the aegis of PPSS would continue.” District SP S Devdatta Singh said eight persons had been arrested for the clash. Sarbeswar is involved in more than 35 criminal cases and is wanted in seven cases, he added.Meanwhile, PPSS leaders have condemned the arrest.
