PALAKKAD: The protests by the CPM against the High Court verdict on contempt-of-court case against M V Jayarajan was aimed at strengthening the pillars of the democracy, said CPM State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.He was speaking in a function organised by the Olavakkode Local Committee, after the inauguration of EMS Study Centre at Mattumantha Junction, here on Monday evening. The party was not against judiciary, or the functioning of the courts in any manner, the leader said. However, he added that in a democracy the courts were set up under the constitution, and if there were deviations people have the right to intervene.The CPM state secretary said that, constitutions were drafted by elected governments and people have a large role to play in a democracy. The party believes in the power of the people, and it is in this context that the protest meet was held in Ernakulam on Monday.He said that in usual circumstances, Jayarajan should have been given the time to appeal, but this was not granted.
