The prospects of lecturers in pre-university (PU) colleges would be safeguarded even after they are integrated with high school, said National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) vice-chancellor R Govinda on Friday.
Govinda, whose report on structural upgradation and reorganisation of school education in the state attracted varied objections from educationists, held a marathon discussion for nearly five hours with members of the public and other stakeholders here at the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan office.
The report recommends doing away with the present PUC system and making it a part of high school.
During the discussion several PU lecturers’ associations expressed concerns that the integration would lead to their designation coming down from that of lecturers to teachers.
For this, Govinda said the prospects of those already in administrative and academic posts would remain the same.
On making B Ed compulsory for postgraduate teachers at secondary levels, he said: “We will have to make draft bands of teachers according to experience, years of service left and the implications of making B Ed compulsory. All this has to be looked at.”
On the issue of merger of schools with low enrolment, Govinda said, “The cohorts entering primary school is less due to demographic factors in the southern part of the state. Our focus on merger would be that no child should be deprived of access to education.”
His report recommends merger of over 6,000 schools with less than 30 students in Class VI and VII. Govinda will have another meeting in the first week of October to finalise the recommendations. “So far, we have received 354 responses. We will incorporate all the proposals and suggestions and then submit them to the government.”
