CHENNAI: The Corporation’s move to impose development charges on residents of areas that have been incorporated into the municipal body’s limits will result in them shelling out more charges, compared to what they have been paying earlier. Sources said that while those in the municipalities would not be paying a high amount, there will definitely be a change for those living in the panchayats.Interestingly, there had been no change in the development charges for the past 14 years. Meanwhile, Metrowater has been asked to seek clarification on collectability of Metrowater Infrastructure Development Charges (MIDC) in respect of newly added areas of Chennai Corporation and after obtaining a reply further action on such cases may be taken, senior civic officials said. The development regulation classifies the metropolitan area into two. The first one includes Chennai City, municipal and town panchayat areas and the second includes the rest of Chennai metropolitan area covering all the village panchayats. The development parameter norms as well as development and regularisation charges vary between the city areas and the ‘rest of the areas’.As the classification is based on the urban character of the distinguished areas, the planning norms and rates of levy shall follow the new classification, sources said.
