It was an emotional moment at the open hearing of the National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday when the wife of slain human rights activist Raj Mohan Chandra, who was murdered in broad daylight in Thiruvannamalai recently, broke down in the court hall while demanding justice.
She was consoled by commission member Satyabrata Pal, who assured her that the NHRC would consider the matter “with all seriousness that it requires.” He also asked the Superintendent of Police of the district to ensure adequate security to her and her family.
In the petition, filed by several members of Chandra’s family, it was alleged that one week before the murder took place, Chandra had approached the SP Ramya Bharati and had apprised her of the perceived threat to his life. He had also applied for gun licences to protect himself but was denied permission. However, it was claimed no adequate protection was given to him.
Over the years, the petitioners claimed that Chandra had been harassed by several lawyers, politicians and by specific police officers for her raising voice against corruption and other issues. Petitions filed by Chandra before various authorities provided ample proof for this. Hence, the petition requested that an independent probe be launched into the matter and culprits who murdered the activist brought to book.
