Those out on the streets did not in any way represent the entire Hindu or Muslim communities but merely belonged to them. Sadly no one can dare disown them. The timing is, however, significant. The 'Hindu Awakening Sammellans' organized to mark the birth centenary celebrations of Guru Golvalkar somehow coincided with Moharram. And it was by design.
The initial laboratory tests to see if the Gujarat experiment can be repeated in Madhya Pradesh are being performed. The findings are encouraging. Immediate provocation would be invented when the time is ripe. I hope I'm wrong in concluding this but these tests have shown that there is a sizeable section within the Muslim community that would fall into the trap.
The literature being circulated in the name of Hindu Awakening has more to do with Muslims than with Hindus. The target is to generate hatred amongst the Muslims and provoke them to do something nasty. The rest would be taken care of as happened in Gujarat.
A sample of the literature in circulation:
Why post Godhra is blown out of proportion when no one talks of the ethnic cleansing of Hindus from Kashmir.
Tell one Muslim Country which has a non-Muslim president.
The Muslim population has increased from 10.4 per cent in 1951 to 14 per cent today while the Hindu Population has decreased from 87.2 per cent in 1951 to 85 per cent of the total population today.
Hindus do away with the two child norm as the Muslims practice the "we five and our twenty five" theory.
And keep a watch on the Muslim and Christian mechanics, auto-rickshaw drivers and others doing such jobs as they can seduce Hindu girls and subsequently convert them into their faith.
The entire Hindu awakening message is weaved around the word Muslim and this literature is being circulated in Muslim dominated areas. Surely it would succeed in generating some animosity. On the other hand no function of the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party is complete without Gunfire. Whether it is the state BJP president's visit to his home town or the birthday of some MLA several rounds are fired in the air and when they are not fired guns and swords are brandished. Whom are these people trying to intimidate?
Also public discourse urging Hindus to take up weapons for the protection of their religion is being employed. I'm not sure about how many Hindus have taken up arms on the BJP's calling but this surely has had its effect on the Muslims. The same was evident when they came fully armed to the Karbala ground in Indore on Moharram day. Here in lies the message. Religion is being used to view someone outside the fold as not worthy of shaking hands with. The hand is holding the sword and is not available for a shake.
MP is getting into riot mode.

Hindus' and 'Muslims' have come out in large numbers within striking distance of each other at least five times in different parts of Madhya Pradesh in the past fortnight. No train was burnt nor any Masjid demolished so why this ruckus on the streets? Conversely what would have these people done had anything of even little consequence happened before they took out their swords and daggers? Section 144 would have surely not sufficed. Nor would have water cannons and tear gas shells been of any help.
