DHENKANAL: As many as 99 people have died in the last nine months in 264 accidents on the National Highway stretch passing through Dhenkanal district. As per official reports, the NH-55 that passes through Dhenkanal - in particular Jhargadia square - is meant for 7,500 vehicles but at present, over 40,000 vehicles ply on the NH daily. Besides, there are other issues like rash and drunken driving, unwanted speed breakers, no road widening and encroachments at several places that have resulted in increased number of casualties every year. Sources said if a rough estimate is drawn, the total number of accidents may increase to 130 and the injury cases will be four times that number.
To worsen the situation, most of the accident victims do not get timely medical attention in the district and many of the cases are referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
These issues were discussed at length in a seminar on road safety here on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, CDMO B C Behera admitted to large-scale vacancies in the district headquarters hospital and other local hospitals. Regional Transport Officer Sanjay Kumar Biswal also spoke.
Meanwhile, the Town Police on Sunday arrested a Sub-Inspector of Excise Department Gyan Ranjan Mishra for rash driving and injuring two persons at Ganesh Bazaar. Following the mishap, irate locals set afire the four-wheeler that the accused was driving.
