New Delhi: Third seed Andy Roddick has beaten Danai Udomchoke of Thailand in straight sets to reach the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday.
The American cruised through the first set 6-3 in just 28 minutes. The second was no different. Roddick, especially clinical in his service games, took it 6-4.
Udomchoke didn't want to go down tamely as he fought back taking the third set into a tiebreak. Roddick prevailed at the end with 15 aces in the match.
Top women's seed Justine Henin beat Vera Dushevina of Russia in straights sets to enter the third round. The Belgian, fresh from her victory at Roland Garros, looked comfortable on grass, taking just an hour to go past her Russian opponent 6-0, 6-4. Her match point, though, was settled through Hawk Eye - being used for the first time at Wimbledon.
Former world number one Martina Hingis beat Aiko Nakamura of Japan 6-1, 6-2 to reach the third round. The ninth seed took 62 minutes to brush aside her Japanese opponent. Hingis looked more confident in this match than in the first round where she got an early scare from N Cavadey. She hit seven aces on her way to victory.
Seventh seed Serena Williams had to work hard in her second round match against Australian Acilia Molik. Molik began well taking the first set into a tiebreaker, but Serena upped her form when it was needed, taking the set 7-6 in 48 minutes. The second was comparatively easier as the American won the second set 6-3 to book a place in round three.
Third seed Jelena Jankovic also advanced into the third round beating Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Meanwhile, sixth seed and this year's French Open finalist Ana Ivanovic was also through to the third round. The Serbian beat Melinda Czink 6-0, 7-6.
