HYDERABAD: In a sort of a role reversal, local people came to the rescue of policemen when a group of foreign nationals, furious over the detention of a compatriot, went berserk and attacked the Langer Houz police station on Thursday night. The people overpowered the attackers and brought the situation under control.Police said they were outnumbered by the attackers who were under the influence of drugs. ``Some of our men were deployed on bandobust duty for Hanuman Jayanti celebrations,’’ police officers said, adding that three sub-inspectors Rambabu, Gopi and Saber were injured in the attack. The trouble started when one of the foreigners abused a local resident of Salarjung Colony, which led to an argument between them. Police reached the place and brought the foreigner to the police station for questioning. Soon, four of his friends also reached the station. According to officials, one of them tried to enter the inspector’s room and the latter asked him to wait outside. Infuriated, the foreigners started attacking the policemen present there and rained blows on them. Police tried to use batons and had to take out a gun to quell the attack but it yielded no result. The foreigners started abusing the policemen, picked up lathis and attacked them. Learning of the melee, locals rushed to the police station and helped the police overpower the foreigners and bring the situation under control. Interestingly, the rescuers included some criminals and history-sheeters .Police said the five foreigners were studying at different colleges and small quantities of ganja were recovered from them. Police registered cases against the five, Mohammed Muneer Abu Mohammed, Aiman Adam Abdula Salae, Mohammed Sameer Aliwas, Abdul Ahmed, and Mohammed Sharif under Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty) of IPC and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
