BHUBANESWAR: Demanding a minor irrigation project, farmers from Angul under the aegis of Angul Zilla Krushak Samaj, are staging a hunger strike before the Assembly. According to the farmers, the State Government had planned a minor irrigation project over Rukuna nullah about 30 years back which would have irrigated 300 hectares of land near Khinda under Angul block. A couple of years back, a soil dam was constructed which supplied water to 13,000 farmers but soon it eroded. The State Government then planned a diversion bund for which Nabard sanctioned funds twice under RIDF but in vain. Since farmers are facing a serious issue of livelihood in the absence of irrigation, they have taken to indefinite agitation, secretary of the body Prasanta Kumar Dash said.
