New Delhi: Calling it an unfortunate incident, Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday said that a farmer committing suicide at a public place and that too where a political rally had been organised is a matter of great shame.
Sachin Pilot was reacting to the suicide by a farmer Gajendra Singh who hung himself from a tree in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's presence at the Aam Aadmi Party's rally against the Land Bill at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
"I don't want to politicise this but it is sad that such an environment has been created in the nation," said Sachin Pilot on the Jantar Mantar incident. Pilot promised to extend all possible help to the victim, who was from Nangal Jhamarwada village in Rajasthan's Dausa, as there is no one to take care of his family at this moment. Pilot had represented Dausa in the 15th Lok Sabha.
Blaming people for not acting in time to save Singh, Pilot said that the farmer could have been saved if someone would have come forward and added that merely making speeches will do no good to the farmers.
Gajendra Singh had climbed the tree even as top AAP leaders were present at the Jantar Mantar, near Parliament, and hanged himself with a piece of cloth. As some people climbed up to save him, the branch gave away and he fell.
He was rushed to nearby RML hospital in a police jeep. Doctors there said that he was "brought dead".
A purported suicide note was recovered from the spot in which he mentioned that he is a farmer and his crops have been destroyed. He has also wrote his family's contact number.
The incident occurred at around 2 PM in the presence of Kejriwal prompting senior AAP leaders to allege that it was an attempt to "sabotage" the rally and slammed the police for being "mute spectators".####
