New Delhi: Sania Mirza's good run continued at the $13,40,000 WTA Acura Classic in San Diego (California) where she beat Dinara Safina of Russia in straight sets in her third round match on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Indian overcame her eight seeded opponent 6-1, 6-2. Sania will now take on another Russian in her next round.
Sania will face world No. 2 and top seed Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals. Sharapova, who is also the defending champion, won her third round match against No. 13 Tatiana Golovin of France 6-0, 6-3.
And it was a day of Russian domination in the tournament as five Russian players moved into the quarter-finals.
Russia's Maria Kirilenko, ranked 42, caused a major upset when she knocked out world No. 3 Jelena Jankovic in the third round in a tough three setter 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Other Russians to make it to the quarter-finals were ninth seeded Elena Dementieva who beat fifth seed Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 7-5.
Anna Chakvetadze, seeded third, won her match against Japan's Ai Sugiyama in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 while fourth seed Nadia Petrova was a 6-3, 7-6 (10) winner over Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
In other match No. 11 Patty Schnyder beat Martina Hingis 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in a third round match.
But Sania's doubles run came to an end when she and partner Shahar Peer were beaten 6-3, 3-6, 10-12 by Su-Wei Hsieh and Alla Kudryavtseva in the second round.
