New Delhi: Sania Mirza has been courting inconsistency for quite some time now. She did it again in her second round match against Japan's Aiko Nakamura.
World number 53 Sania was definitely not at her best in her first round encounter against Olga Savchuk. In her second match, she looked completely out of sorts.
But that doesn't take away anything from Nakamura's win. She clearly beat her Indian counterpart with her pace and power, winning the first set 6-3 in a little over 30 minutes.
Down one set. And Sania yet again failed to read the situation to cause some sort of a turnaround. She was down 4-1 within minutes. It was then that Sania showed glimpses of the kind of game she is capable of playing. But the unforced errors and the double faults just kept piling.
And Sania's body language was not helping her either. She made 26 unforced errors compared to Nakamura's 9, dropping five of her service games.
The Hyderabadi started her year on the WTA circuit well enough. But she needs to do much more to keep it going on the big stage.
