Indian Wells: India's Sania Mirza has won her first round match at the Indian Wells. Sania Mirza kicked off her campaign at the tennis tournament against Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva.
In women's first round play at the Indian Wells tournaments in California, Sania rallied from a first-set loss to beat Mariya Koryttseva, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
87-ranked Sania Mirza who had won her first round singles in the Australian open this season, beat the 96th ranked Ukranian 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a match that lasted almost two hours.
Sania had been training with Andre Aggasi's trainer Gil Reyes in Las Vegas for a week ahead of the hard-court season.
The 22-year-old had made a remarkable return from a wrist injury, winning the Australian open mixed crown with Mahesh Bhupathi and reaching the finals of the Pattaya open earlier this year.
Sania will also play in the doubles draw and has teamed up with Chia-Jung Chuang of the Chinese Taipei.
The 17-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Marta Domachowska, 6-1, 6-3, to earn a second-round match against second seeded Jelana Jankovic.
Two-time tournament champion Lleyton Hewitt continued his comeback from hip surgery by beating Jan Hernych 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Thursday in the first round of the men's draw at the BNP Paribas Open.
In the biggest tournament since the Australian Open, other winners Thursday included Jarkko Nieminen and Ivan Ljubicic while Feliciano Lopez and Jose Acasuso were among the first-round casualties.
