Sanjay Gupta’s H'wood fixation isn’t restricted to his scripts, he's now looking westward for the music in his films.

Mumbai: Director Sanjay Gupta’s Hollywood fixation isn’t restricted to his scripts. He is now following in the footsteps of the West for the music in his films.

Hollywood has always had a trend of original soundtracks, wherein a movie’s album is a compilation of songs composed by various artistes.

The songs are linked to the movie's theme, but only a few are used in the actual screenplay.

Gupta has planned something similar for his forthcoming productions Shootout At Lokhandwala and Woodstock Villa.

To compose the music of these films, he has chosen pop stars like Aryans, Euphoria, Strings, Mika, Biddu and Shibani Kashyap over mainstream music directors.

Gupta said their songs will be used as OST for the promotion, but may not feature in the film.

“I don’t agree with the trend of using only one music director, as I like to work with more creative people at one time. These bands suit my style and one can’t say that only conventional music directors know audience tastes,” he said.

Vishal Dadlani of the Vishal-Shekhar duo, who has worked with the director in the past, believes the OST culture is inevitable. “Fresher sounds, and the concept of singles will have to come into our music, as this is a global phenomenon,” he said.

“As far as the artistes go,” he added, “a Bollywood movie gives the bands much more visibility than the Indipop scene. Also, since no top line music director will share creative space in the same project, if one wants a variety in the score, this is perhaps the only way forward.”

Will Gupta’s move be a trendsetter for Bollywood music? We'll have to wait and watch.

What's your reaction?
