New Delhi: In a big relief for Pakistani virologist Dr Khalil Chisty, the Supreme Court announced his release on Wednesday. The apex court has said that the punishment given to him will be considered undergone. He had challenged the life imprisonment given to him for a murder in Rajasthan in 1992.
An apex court bench of Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi had heard Chisty's appeal. The court has directed authorities to return all documents, including passport to Chisty who is free to return to Pakistan without any restriction.
The 81-year-old virologist had been placed under house arrest for 18 years before conviction. In 2011, the Rajasthan High Court upheld his life imprisonment sentence.
The apex court had on May 10 granted Chisty permission to visit his home city of Karachi in Pakistan during the pendency of his appeal against his conviction in the murder case. Chisty was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a man in a brawl when he went to offer prayers at the shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty in Ajmer in April 1992.
He was granted bail by the apex court April 9. He was awarded life imprisonment in 2010 after a trial that lasted 18 years.
