The Supreme Court is likely to commence the final hearing on Wednesday on a bunch of petitions challenging the mass culling of stray dogs.
The bench will hear a plea by the Animal Welfare Board of India to decide the issue of primacy of laws framed by Centre and state governments in this regard.
The board had said that these Rules mandate birth control of street dogs through strict implementation of the Animal Birth Control Dogs Rules.
Earlier in November, the Kerala High Court had given a go ahead for catching stray dogs in the state and sterilising them. It had asked the local authorities to intensify the sterilisation process.
The court was giving the verdict to several petitions that urged the removal of stray dogs from the streets. The court said that a situation where stray dogs become a threat to human life should be avoided.
