BANGALORE: About 12,342 schools covered under the Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) flagship school nurturing programme received donations worth Rs 79.58 crore since 2008, with 35 schools in Bangalore (North) district receiving the most, amounting to Rs 6.07 crore, the highest amongst all 31 districts in the state.Express spoke to Bangalore (North) Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) T C Chandraiah, who said the figure was commendable although more was expected.“We must understand that the figure of Rs 6 crore in my district consists of donations that are not continuous in nature. For instance, one donor may have contributed in the form of building a compound or supplying computers,” said Chandraiah.He added that further efforts would be made to increase donations for government schools.“We obviously expected the amount to be more. We will undertake more programmes to attract interested donors. For instance, we held Naavu-Neevu, a general gathering last July, which had participation from alumni and others related to school. Through this, several schools received computers,” he added.School nurturing is an innovative programme devised by the DPI to attract investors to donate infrastructure for local schools. Interested investors would then enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with DPI for a period of five years.Chandraiah said that there were plans to incorporate school nurturing into Samudaayadutta Shaale (schools approaching community) programmes.“We want to reach out to all the interested donors to invest in school infrastructure,” he added.While 1,192 schools in 11 districts in Bangalore have received Rs 13.02 crore, schools in Mysore district have got Rs 10.97 crore, schools in Belgaum have received Rs 9.63 crore and schools in Gulbarga got Rs 6.15 crore.
