HYDERABAD: The long arm of the law caught up with IAS officer Y Srilakshmi when CBI officials arrested her Monday afternoon for her alleged role in granting mining leases to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy's company.
Though her arrest had been on the cards, indications were that CBI would wait before moving in. But the agency is said to have come to the conclusion that it has enough evidence to proceed against her. After the arrest at Srilakshmi's office at Koti here, CBI officials produced her in the first metropolitan magistrate's court at Nampally but were told to bring her again at 10.30 am Tuesday.

But CBI, in its remand diary before the court, said that Srilakshmi should be remanded to judicial custody as she might influence witnesses or even try leaving the country, if allowed to stay out of prison. CBI sought 15 days custody of the officer, saying she had not fully cooperated when she was summoned and questioned earlier.

At the Nampally court complex, precautions were taken to keep media personnel and onlookers out.

When the judge asked CBI officials where she would be lodged for the night, they informed him it would be at the Central Crime Station's women's police station. At this, Srilakshmi broke down. Then, after consulting her husband Gopi Krishna and her counsel, she pleaded with the judge to allow her to spend the night at the CBI's office in Koti. After the hearing, she was driven away in a Bolero to the CBI office.
