CHENNAI: Checks and stripes thrown in with translucent fabrics. This, combined with traditional yet contemporary silhouettes form Kolkata-based fashion designer Nupur Kanoi’s recent summer/resort collection — the Kundalini Project. Inspired by Vedic Indian symbolism, Nupur has created a line of Indo-western clothing to suit this season. Her collection reflects a rich use of crafts, embroideries and surface texturing. “My inspiration is the Vedic Indian symobolism. So I have incorporated a lot of triangles, checks and stripes for surface decoration,” says the designer, whose collection is being showcased at Evoluzione, Nungambakkam. Breaking the monotony of summer colours, the designer has introduced a lot of whites, nudes and blacks with an accent of electric blue. “Every time you say summer, it’s tacky bright oranges, yellow and hot pinks. Here, just to cool your eyes, I have made use of whites, blacks and greys, with a splash of electric blue to break the black and white pattern,” she says.Nupur has merged breezy wear with intense quilting, pleating and thread work. The designer has used shoulder plates, cuffs that can be ripped off, intense sleeve details, all in fabrics that are easy to wear. “Translucent fabrics are comfortable in summer. Organza, chiffon and georgettes complete my collection. The garments look heavy because of the intense detailing, but the fabrics are light,” says the stylist turned designer. She has brought to the city some exclusive pieces from her creation, a few redesigned in specific colours to suit the taste of Chennai. Says she, “I have chosen a few exclusive pieces to showcase here – a lot of kurtas and long sleeve jackets dyed in bright colours like pink and green. I have designed jackets, wraps and trousers using fabrics that are easy and fall well with your body. This city being a little conservative, I have chosen semi-translucent fabrics.”
