The craving for instant fame is destroying the talent of young singers, playback singer and the 2012 state award winner Sudeep Kumar said on Sunday.
The absence of a music director like G Devarajan also has proved to be a handicap for the younger generation of singers, he said, addressing a face-to-face arranged by the Anyonyam Cultural Forum here.
Devarajan Master employed stringent guidelines in selecting a singer. He taught that varied expressions lay hidden in a single word, and that expression was more important than voice in music. Sudeep Kumar attributed his achievements to the training he received from the Devarajan ‘school.’
Sudeep Kumar had turned a professional singer in 1998, but he attracted attention as a singer through ‘Ente Saarike...,’ a song from the 2008 film ‘Madambi.’ This year, he won the best playback singer award for the song ‘Chenthaamare...’ from the film ‘Rathinirvedam.’
Sudeep said that he was sad that Devarajan Master was not alive to witness the acknowledgment that he had received. Journalist C Rahim welcomed the gathering and P Gopinarayanan proposed the vote of thanks.
