HYDERABAD: Proposing to the love of your life is probably one of the best feelings in the world. Even though we saw Monica in Friends (sitcom) proposing to her beau Chandler, and Julia Roberts who went down on her knees in The Runaway Bride to propose to Richard Gere, it is not considered ‘traditional’ for a woman to propose. But, in case of a man stringing her along, or a reluctant beau not wanting to make that final commitment, why should women have to wait for men to pop the question? That’s how February 29 became a day for women to make sure they get their man. With today being the day for all the women out there to go down on their knees and confess their feelings, let’s see what city’s denizens have to say about women asking a man out, leave alone proposing for marriage.Men, for one, definitely seem happy if this shift takes place.Says Soumalya Chakraborty, “I think boys should stop taking leads at all because we have been doing this for centuries. The nature demands some change in order, and since girls always demand for ‘Ladies-first’ in everything, they can take a lead in the department of proposing as well.” On similar lines, Navjot Singh, a corporate employee from the city says, “For once boys will have the opportunity to say No.However, since it is such a rare phenomenon, I don’t think any guy would be able to say no to a girl asking him out.” Agreeing with him, Sachin Pandey, another corporate employee, opines, “A woman proposing to a man will be of great help to our pockets, and I would love to see them doing it every day of the year.A man’s whole life revolves around trying to impress girls.Such an act by girls will atleast help us feel special once in four years.” Women from the city, surprisingly, believe that they don’t just need this one day to ask a man out, and that they can do so whenever they feel like.Says Nivedita Rayavarapu, a student from the city, “The ritual of a girl proposing on February 29 is funny. If she has to wait for four years to ask him out, he will have kids by then.” She further adds on a funny note, “Probably girls should ask guys out on April 1.” While Nivedita doesn’t appreciate the ritual, Nadia, a 22-year-old from the city, believes that she wouldn’t mind proposing to a guy she loves, be it Feb 29 or any other day.“I believe that if my Prince Charming can get clueless sometimes, I don’t mind getting on my knees to show him the right direction.” Right of passageThe right of every woman to propose on this day each leap year goes back a few centuries to when the leap year day had no recognition in the English law.As the day had no legal status, it was reasonable to assume that the tradition also had no status. However, women who were concerned about being ‘left on the shelf’, took matters into their own hands by proposing to the man they wished to marry, taking advantage of the anomaly

What's your reaction?
