ERODE/COIMBATORE: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday asked the voters to teach land  grabbers a lesson. Campaigning for  Malliga Paramasivam — the AIADMK’s Erode mayor candidate in the local body  elections — at Chithodu in the afternoon, she said  special anti-land grab cell was opened in all districts  to keep the promise made before the Assembly elections  that people will be protected from those involved in  land grabbing. Quoting several figures to highlight the functioning of  the anti-land grab cells, she said they received 17,431  complaints and registered 718 cases so far. Among them, chargesheets were filed in 28 cases and 755 arrested. So  far, land worth `625 crore has been retrieved and handed  over to its true owners. Also, 25 special courts have  been set up to deal land grab cases. On the land grab case against former DMK minister and  district secretary N K K P Raja, she said, “People in  Erode district felt threatened by Raja’s activities. He  acted only for his benefit and not for the people. After  the AIADMK came to power, people got relief from him...  Not only Raja, even DMK councillors of Erode threatened  people.”Saying that Erode Corporation did not see any  development in the last five years, the  chief minister said the AIADMK would ensure adequate  water supply, good roads and sanitary condition and  streetlights in local bodies if voted to power. She also promised protected water for Erode town from  Uratchikottai barrage across the Cauvery River. Speedy  completion of outer ring road project, flyover near MGR  Statue junction, Common Effluent Treatment Plant to  solve effluent problem and laying of roads that were  damaged due to underground drainage project. During the Coimbatore campaign, Jayalalithaa blamed the previous DMK regime for law and order problems. “ The law and order situation in the State deteriorated during the DMK rule. But now Tamil Nadu has become a garden of peace after the AIADMK came to power,” the chief minister claimed.  She did not mince words for outgoing Coimbatore Corporation Mayor R Venkatachalam of the  Congress saying that he was controlled by Paintamil Paari, son of former minister Pongalur N Palanisamy, throughout his term of five years. Paari is a DMK councillor in the corporation.According to Jayalalithaa, the situation was so bad that the public were afraid of meeting councillors during the 2006-2011 rule of the DMK-Congress alliance in the city.Campaigning for AIADMK’s mayoral candidate S M Velusamy and its councillor candidates, the AIADMK leader said the DMK stint saw delays in implementing development schemes. If voted to power, the AIADMK would give priority to creating basic facilities in the corporation. It would complete the Pilloor Water II Phase Scheme and Kavundampalayam-Athikadavu Water Project at the earliest. Jayalalithaa assured the people that proper standards would be maintained in implementing the underground drainage scheme.
