New Delhi: A 22-year-old labourer was killed when an iron girder fell on him at a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) construction site Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place at 6 am near Ram Bagh at Punjabi Bagh in west Delhi. The chain of a crane lifting the girder snapped and it fell on the ground, critically injuring Vicky Singh.
Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was rushed to the Maharaja Agrasen hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Agarwal told IANS.
"Things are completely normal in the area. There was no traffic disruption following the accident," said Agarwal.
This is the third such accident in the past 10 days. On July 12, six people were killed after an elevated section of the Delhi Metro that was under construction in south Delhi collapsed. A day later, five people were injured in another accident at the same site.
Reacting to the third Metro mishap this month, Chief Minister Sheila Diskhit said Wednesday's accident was more of a human error than a project failure.
"It is the crane that fell. Nothing happened to the rail track. It's not a project failure," she stated.
