Atlanta: The restaurant is a classic example of 'I am having trouble with my eyes'.
The waiter passes you the menu and says, "Can i start you off with a cocktail or a glass of wine?"
And then seeing you squint at the menu, he quickly adds, "Oh! Can't read the menu? That's the red alaskan jumbo king crab legs."
If you need a pair of spectacles to to skim over a restaurant's dinner selection, you're probably over forty and don't blame your poor vision on all the television you watch.
When you hit your forties, ageing eyes are inevitable.
But don't fret. There are ways that you can effectively protect your eyes.
Most poeple will eventually have trouble seeing close up and that is why eye doctors say that the right time to start protecting the eyes is when people reach their thirtes.
- Wear sunglasses to shield out ultraviolet light.
- Eat well. A diet rich in antioxidants may prevent the onset of macular degeneration.
- A good pair of glasses helps. No-line bifocals can correct for distance and hide that you're wearing reading glasses.
Optometrist Micheal Bloom says, "Whether you wear contacts, spectacles or even if you have perfect distance vision unaided, you're still going to loose the ability to focus up close. It's just a change in the elasticity of our lens internally. It's very predictable and happens to everybody."
When people hit their fifties, the eye's natural lenses aren't as clear as before.
That's when they start needing more light to read than when they were younger.
For the eyes, as with other parts of the body, time takes its toll. But prevention early on, extra light, and help from a doctor can keep them youthful longer.
