COIMBATORE: The Pollachi police grappled with an unusual ‘stinking’ case on hand on Wednesday and Thursday — offloading poultry waste illegally transported from Kerala.Early on Wednesday, MDMK cadre and locals intercepted a lorry and mini-truck carrying poultry waste near Vazhanthayamaram village and alerted the police. Acting promptly, the Anamalai police arrested five persons and seized the vehicles. Since the seized vehicles had to be left in the custody of the court, they had to ensure that the stinking waste was discarded.Initially they planned to escort the vehicle to Namakkal for discarding the waste as one driver hailed from there. However, the plan went awry when vigilant locals spotted the vehicles on the Pollachi-Palladam Road on Wednesday night and blocked them.“We were shocked that the waste would be discarded in Namakkal with police protection and opposed it,” said V Easwaran, MDMK district secretary. This led to a fracas during which the lorry windshield was broken. The stranded policemen had to wait a few metres away from the lorry unable to bear the stench. Later, the police decided to take the vehicles to Kerala, but the strike against the petrol price hike in the neighbouring state put paid to the plans on Thursday.Coimbatore Collector M Karunakaran assured that the waste was being returned to the seller in Kerala with police escort. Two MDMK cadres were booked for damaging the lorry.
