CHENNAI/VELLORE: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday asserted that all government functions in the State would be marked by simplicity. When a scribe pointed out that the government function for launching the free rice scheme was held in a very simple manner and asked whether this trend would continue, Jayalalithaa said, “Definitely.”“Our objective is to avoid unnecessary expenditure and to avoid conducting public functions in an ostentatious manner. I am proud that we are fulfilling our election promises,” she added. On the remark of DMK president M Karunanidhi that if the presence of his poem in the textbooks meant for Uniform School Education System was a hindrance, the government could remove the poem and implement the USE, Jayalalithaa said,”The remark seems to be childish. We have postponed the implementation of USE keeping in mind the quality of education to be given to the children and not because of the poem written by Karunanidhi.”Regarding the demand from parents that the government should interfere in fixing the fee structure for schools, the chief minister said the government would try to resolve any issue if it was brought to its notice either by parents or teachers aggrieved by any problem. They need not stage an agitation to resolve their issues. The simplicity that marked the launch of free rice scheme was evident in Vellore. It was one of the quietest government functions ever witnessed in the district. No fanfare, no lining up of government vehicles, no hustling and bustling of ruling party functionaries, no MLAs or Ministers, no blaring public address system and not even a sign of the ruling party cadre. The launch of the free rice scheme at Perumugai village turned out to be not more than an informal ceremony under the supervision of the top officials of the district.
