CHENNAI: While the notification for the elections to the local bodies in the State is expected to be issued anytime after the ongoing Budget session gets over on September 14, political parties in the State are gearing up to face the elections by making arrangements at the grassroots level.The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the main Opposition party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), on Friday began issuing applications to aspirants, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) announced that applications would be received from September 7 to 12. Applications for the Chennai Corporation would be received in Chennai on September 4. DMDK founder Vijayakanth said the applications would be received between September 4 to 12 at the party headquarters. The Dravida Munnetra K is receiving the applications from September 5 to 12.At the AIADMK headquarters in Royapettah, a large number of party cadre and functionaries gathered to receive the applications. For North Chennai, party’s presidium chairman E Madhusoodhanan and for RK Nagar, MLA Vetrivel received the applications. Similarly, N Balaganga, MLA Pazha Karuppiah, MLA V Kalairajan, CR Saraswathi, Information Minister G Senthamizhan and MLA Rajalakshmi, received the applications for their respective districts. Only a few days ago, the AIADMK government amended the law to hold direct elections for mayors of corporations and chair persons of municipalities in the State. The elections have to be completed by October 24 as per the law.
