CHENNAI: In another pro-poor initiative, the Jayalalithaa government today announced development of a satellite township near here to house 12,000 dwelling units for the weaker sections under a Rs 2,160-crore project.The township would come up on 311.05 acres at Thirumazhisai off Chennai-Bangalore highway, about 30 km from here, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha said in the assembly.She said that people belonging to marginalised sections, small and middle income groups would be the beneficiaries of the project that would make available houses at affordable price.The land belonging to Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) would be utilised for the project besides acquiring 12.87 acres covering five villages, she said in a suo moto statement."Chennai city is fast expanding where it is hard for people from marginalised sections to buy residential plots or house. To address this, my government is implementing several housing schemes and this is part of that," Jayalalithaa said.The multi-storeyed project would be undertaken by TNHB and would have all amenities including schools and hospital.She also announced the TNHB would construct 554 houses in multi-storey in 3.73 acres of land in Ashok Pillar area in the heart of the city at a cost of Rs 100 crore.Jayalalithaa said her government has also decided to raise reservation in housing to disabled from one per cent to three per cent to coincide with TNHB's golden jubilee celebrations.The new scheme is the latest in the series of welfare schemes unveiled by the AIADMK government since it came to power in May last to fulfil a plethora of poll promises.It has already launched schemes for distribution of 25 kg free rice, health insurance, laptops to higher secondary students and three lakh solar-powered concrete houses to replace huts and pro-women programmes, including mixers and grinders, allocating over 8,000 crore in its budget.
