‘Jo bhi Hyderabad ka paani ek baar pee leta, woh Hyderabadi ban jaata,’’ says MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi to allay the fears of people from the northeast about reprisals against them for the violence that is taking place in Assam. “The Assamese people living here are as Hyderabadi as me,” he said. Referring to rumours that ‘something’ is going to happen after Eid on Aug 20, the MIM strongman says nothing of the sort will happen. “Kya hone wala hai Eid ke baad? Kahin se sher nikal ne wala hai kya? Sab bekaar baataan hai,’’ he told Express.
Owaisi visited Anjaiah Nagar in Rayadurgam and Siddiqui Nagar in Madhapur to interact with the local people and the Assamese community there. ‘’I offered my noon prayers at a mosque there yesterday. I asked some of the Assamese there whether anyone had harassed or threatened them and they said no,’’ Owaisi said.
The Hyderabad MP said some of them told him that they had heard that Assam CM Tarun Gogoi had urged the Assamese in Hyderabad to return home before August 20. ‘’This is nonsense. Nobody has made such an appeal. Hindus and Muslims staying here are more bothered about earning their livelihood.’’
Asked what actually happened in Anjaiah Nagar last Saturday, Owaisi said that it was a minor issue. “A group of persons spotted two youngsters consuming liquor near a place of worship. One of them asked whether the two were from Assam. We cannot say this is targeting the Assamese,’’ he said.
