At least two persons were killed and 30 injured in three separate road accidents reported in the city and neigbouring districts, police said on Friday.
A 58-year-old farmer and his four-year-old nephew died in an accident near Periyapalayam when their two-wheeler collided head-on with a tourist van.
Police said Mani (58) of Tiruvallur was on way to the Periyapalayam temple along with his wife Kala (50) and nephew Surender (4) when a van ferrying tourists to Uthukottai collided with the two-wheeler. Mani and Surender died on the spot while Kala, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the Government General Hospital in Chennai. The van driver is absconding, police said.
In another mishap in Chennai, a mini-van rammed into a stationary MTC bus, injuring 8 persons.
Police said the van driven by Mahesh, proceeding from Tiruvanmiyur to Anna Square, rammed an MTC bus plying on route 27D between MMDA and Anna Square, near Ezhilagam. Two persons waiting at the bus stop, three others who alighted from the bus and three travelling in the van were injured. The van driver was arrested.
Meanwhile, 19 passengers, including five women, sustained minor injuries when government bus fell into a ditch near Melmaruvathur, in Kancheepuram district.
Police said the bus was on its way from Koyambedu to Tiruchy when another government bus, that was travelling in front, applied break to avoid hitting a lorry in front that suddenly came to a halt. The driver of the Tiruchy-bound bus swerved his vehicle to the left and ran into a ditch. Injured passengers were rushed to government hospitals in Madurantakam and Chengelpet.
