An Udupi-based man has claimed he was duped by the woman he married and that she was helped by a few others, including his uncle.
Pankaj K Jain, a stationery shop owner, told Express that his uncle, Kishore, had told him about his friends who are marriage brokers in Belgaum.
“My mother and I went with Kishore to Belgaum on June 28.
He introduced us to Sanjay alias Swami who took me to his house.
There I met Bharati and knew I wanted to marry her,” Jain said.
He said two other brokers were present, of whom one introduced himself as Mallappa.
The brokers demanded a commission and Jain paid them `1,80,000.
The next day they got married in a temple near Belgaum, after which they left for Udupi.
Bharati was accompanied by Kiran, her socalled brother.
Jain said after they reached Udupi, Kiran asked him to buy fruits for Bharati and so he went to the market.
Before he returned, Bharati and Kiran had disappeared with cash, his mobile phone, gold ornaments and other valuables, he alleged.
Realising he had been duped, Jain went back to Belgaum, but none of the brokers or his uncle helped him.
He even approached the local police.
Finally, one of Jain’s friends in Belgaum helped him nab Sanjay and Kishore, who were handed over to the police.
When probed, they admitted to taking commission from Jain.
SP Sandeep Patil said the other accused are in Gujarat Photo of Jain and Bharati after their wedding in Belgaum and will be arrested soon
